SAMHSA’s mission is to lead public health and service delivery efforts that promote mental health, prevent substance misuse, and provide treatments and supports to foster recovery while ensuring equitable access and better outcomes. Many commonly-abused chemical substances can lead to long-term health effects that vary depending on the kind of drug. For instance, alcohol abuse can cause liver damage and dementia, while opioid abuse can lead to low blood sodium and seizures. Looking at all of these statistics on drug users and opioid prescription, there are some links that can be made to states with the highest overdose deaths. The states with the highest number of deaths are Tennessee, Kentucky, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Drug Abuse Among Demographics

In other words, the likelihood that a user may overdose or develop health issues has no impact on its classification as a Schedule I – V drug. Drug overdoses are one of the leading causes of injury death in adults and have risen over the past several decades in the United States (1–3). Overdoses involving synthetic opioids (fentanyl, for example) and stimulants (cocaine and methamphetamine, for example) have also risen in the past few years (1,4). This report presents rates of drug overdose deaths from the National Vital Statistics System over a 20-year period by demographic group and by the type of drugs involved (specifically, opioids and stimulants), with a focus on changes from 2021 to 2022. The 2021 NSDUH Detailed Tables present national estimates of substance use and mental health. The tables still include information for many different populations in 2021.

Drug Abuse Treatment & Prevention

Comparing the prevalence of past 30-day substance use reported in each of the four U.S. Census Bureau regions, the prevalence of heroin, cocaine, illicit fentanyl, and prescription sedative use was highest at Northeast treatment sites, whereas the prevalence of illicit stimulant use was highest recovery and new life at chelsea house at Midwest treatment sites. Several factors related to death investigation and reporting may affect measurement of death rates involving specific drugs. At autopsy, the substances tested for and the circumstances under which the toxicology tests are performed vary by jurisdiction.
